Open 7 days a week
The Upper East Side seafood restaurant Flex Mussels recently opened its flagship location. It is the latest in a string of recent openings on the Manhattan’s most exclusive thoroughfare. Originally a speakeasy, the fish and chips joint has since been converted into an aquarium themed bar with all the bells and whistles.
The restaurant’s impressive menu features 23 different preparations of steamed mussels. These include the Grandmere style, a variation on the classic French dish that includes green olives, cilantro, and cream. This particular dish is not for the faint of heart, but it does come with a price.
The restaurant also boasts an impressive raw bar with an extensive selection of Belgian beers. You can even take a shucking lesson from a world-renowned shucking champion. On Sundays, you can try the all-you-can-eat mussel special.

For lunch or dinner, you can choose from a variety of mussels, calamari, and oysters. You’ll find the menu to be reasonably priced, with dishes starting at under $15.
The restaurant features several different sauces. These include a classic Classic Sauce, a spicy Thai-inspired sauce, and a rich coconut broth.
The menu isn’t as expansive as other restaurants, but it does have a few unique dishes. Some of the favorites are the New England Clam Chowder, Fried Oysters, and Pistols on Horseback.

Oyster pairing classes
The Flex Oyster Pairing Classes will provide an opportunity for participants to learn how to pair oysters with wine. Guests will have the chance to ask questions and take part in shucking and tasting oysters during the class. They will also get an opportunity to sample a wide variety of oysters, including those from Maine and France. These classes will take place at the Flex West Village location and will move to the former location in early 2015.
Participants will also be able to ask questions during the class using a video conferencing platform. The class will last around an hour and will include a presentation, questions, and a chance to discuss the pairing. This class will focus on learning the basics of oyster pairing, merroir, and orange wine.
Shucking lessons
If you love mussels, but aren’t a fan of the shucking, Flex Mussels has you covered.
