For years experts have been advising overweight people that there is no magic pill that will help them lose weight. While this is still true, a few medications have proven effective at helping some people shed unwanted pounds. If you are trying to lose weight, one of these three medications could be helpful for you.
1. Sermorelin
Sermorelin is an analog of growth hormone-releasing hormone found naturally occurring in your body. It is FDA approved for optimizing growth hormone levels in adults.
Sermorelin works by stimulating the pituitary gland to produce human growth hormone. Because people naturally produce less HGH as they age, this therapy can be used to restore HGH to previous levels, which can increase energy, boost metabolism and promote fat burning.
In addition to its weight loss benefits, Sermorelin may increase libido, improve skin elasticity and tone, boost energy and promote muscle growth. Sermorelin has minimal side effects and the price of sermorelin is competitive with other medications and supplements in the same category.
2. Orlistat
Orlistat aids in weight loss by preventing the body from absorbing about one-third of the fat you consume. Orlistat has proven to be effective but comes with some side-effects that can be unpleasant, though usually mild. Because the side-effects, which include abdominal cramps, gas, leaking oily stool and uncontrollable or frequent bowel movements tend to worsen the more fat you eat, it is recommended that people taking Orlistat consume a low-fat diet. As a result, while Orlistat can aid weight loss by reducing fat absorption, it will not allow you to eat a high-fat diet and still lose weight.
3. Naltrexone HCl and Bupropion
This combination drug, known as Contrave, combines naltrexone, which is FDA approved for the treatment of alcohol and opioid dependence, with bupropion, which is approved for the treatment of depression, seasonal affective disorder and smoking cessation. Contrave helps some people lose weight by decreasing hunger and cravings.
Contrave use carries a risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, but the most common side effects are nausea, constipation, headache, vomiting, dizziness, insomnia and dry mouth. The drug also sometimes causes seizures and an increase in blood pressure and heart rate.
If you need to drop some weight, combining one of these medications with changes to your diet and exercise can be effective. Talk to your doctor to determine if one of these medications may be an effective treatment for you.
