The Best Matthew McConaughey Films
Dallas Buyers Club
This 2013 biographical drama about HIV-diagnosed rodeo cowboy Ron Woodroof who tried to find drugs to treat his disease earned McConaughey his first Academy Award for best actor. McConaughey’s portrayal of the character haunted and touched millions of people. He was able to bring intensity into the character that only he can bring to the table. He was able to fully manifest the hell Woodroof went through when struggling with HIV and trying to make things better for others diagnosed with the disease during a time when HIV and AIDS, were not understood. Dallas Buyers Club for many is McConaughey’s best movie. Even if that is not that for others, it is definitely in their top three.
Magic Mike
Before McConaughey wore a cowboy hat in Dallas Buyers Club and hated processed foods, he first wore a cowboy hat as an ex-stripper in Magic Mike. This comedy-drama movie about male strippers trying to make their way to the world enabled McConaughey to bring out his more sensual side. Despite playing only a supporting part in this movie, no one can deny that McConaughey made his mark as Dallas a greedy Texan hunk who owns a club.

Mud
Not everyone agrees that this is in fact one of McConaughey’s best films. But, after reading countless reviews from many people, including movie critics, Mud is in fact a great watch. In this movie, McConaughey played Mud, an outlaw who is hoping to fix a boat to escape with the love of his life. In this movie, McConaughey reminded people just how brilliant his acting is when it comes to a drama that explores a number of elements including revenge, coming-of-age, and more. McConaughey appeared alongside the late and great actor Sam Shepard.
Interstellar
Interstellar is a sci-fi drama film that follows the story of NASA pilot Joseph Cooper who had to choose between saving humanity and staying with his daughter. Despite its sci-fi theme, McConaughey’s performance alongside Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain made this movie into a full-on tearjerker flick. The factor that really stood out for most viewers when watching a movie is the love McConaughey embodied in this role which has proven to be bigger than the universe.
Dazed and Confused
In his early 20s, McConaughey played David Wooderson, an older man who can’t seem to let go of his high school days. Just like in Magic Mike, McConaughey’s role in this movie was a supporting one. However, that didn’t stop him from making his mark.
These movies are the ones you’re going to want to watch again and again – and one of the reasons for that is McConaughey, and the characters he brought to life. There aren’t any romantic-focused films in this list, but, he definitely had his fair share of love stories. His movie “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” alongside Kate Hudson is one of the best rom-coms in Hollywood.
