9 Habits You Need to Add to Your Nightly Routine

It may take a few days to get into the habit.

Do you have a nightly routine? Do you keep up with all of the necessary things to ensure tomorrow is a great day?

If you don’t have any sort of routine, it’s time to start thinking of one!

Keeping a nighttime routine makes waking up in the morning a lot easier. You’ll get better sleep and you’ll be in better health, too.

Uncertain where to start? We’ve collected some of the best habits you should start including every night before you go to sleep.

1. Flossing

Brushing your teeth is a given, but are you flossing as well? Knowing how to clean gums is an important step to a healthy smile. All of those hard to reach places are impossible to get with a normal brush.

Try to begin flossing before it’s time to go sleep so that your teeth and gums are cleaned to perfection. It’ll not only keep you from needing an emergency dentist visit, but it also gives you better breath in the morning.

2. Wash Your Face

A night skincare routine is a great way to always look your best. Your face is the main part of your body that gets looked at the most throughout the day. Why not make it look amazing?

A skincare regimen doesn’t need to be elaborate, but it does make a huge difference. Start with an easy face scrub and then add on more items as needed. Once you get into the habit, you might find you want a more in-depth regimen so don’t be afraid to experiment.

3. Soak Your Feet

After a long day at work, there’s nothing more relaxing than soaking those aching feet in some hot water. It’s a great way to unwind and let go of excess stress as the water soothes the aches.

This is even better if you work at a physical-heavy job, such as construction.

A simple bucket with some hot water works wonders, but don’t hesitate to make this new habit even fancier. Add some scents to the water, or get one of those foot bath massage machines. You deserve to indulge sometimes, too!

4. Apply Lotion

After you’ve washed up, don’t forget to put on appropriate lotion. Both your face and your feet benefit from a regular dose of high-quality lotion.

If you don’t like the way lotion feels, then doing it right before bed is a perfect time to apply it. You’ll fall asleep with the lotion working its way into your skin, leaving you refreshed when you wake up.

5. Shut off Electronics

Thirty minutes before you get into bed, turn off your phone and your television. Turn off any distracting electronics that shine with a bright screen. It’s tempting to keep browsing or watching your favorite show until you can’t keep your eyes open.

The problem is that these kinds of displays send signals to your brain that makes falling asleep much harder. You’re doing yourself a disservice by continuing to use them so soon before bedtime. By turning them off earlier, you’ll undo the effects of those blue lights, giving your brain time to relax and start preparing for sleep.

If there’s a single item on this night routine ideas list that you should follow, it’s this one. You’ll fall asleep so much easier because of this single habit.

6. Read

Instead of using electronics, try reading a physical book or a magazine. These still give you a nice activity that’s relaxing without tricking your brain into thinking it needs to stay awake.

Pull out that old favorite story you loved as a kid, or start working your way through that series you always wanted to try. Reading is a great way to engage your brain with new ideas and phrases that’ll have lasting benefits in all aspects of your life.

7. Enjoy a Small Snack

It’s difficult to go to sleep on an empty stomach, but most of us try to stay away from food when it’s so close to bedtime. The thing is that it’s better to eat a light snack than to try and sleep while you’re hungry.

When you’re starting to wind down, have a small snack of nuts, berries, or fruit. A few crackers with peanut butter or cheese also works well.

Keeping the portion size small is the best way to keep your body ready for sleep while ensuring your stomach isn’t grumbling while you lay in bed.

8. Tidy Up

A messy home is no fun for anyone involved. It brings a certain level of stress that continues to affect you even when you’re not home.

You don’t want to do a deep-dive cleaning right before you go sleep, but tidying up a little makes a huge difference. Put away dishes and other items that you’ve used throughout the day. Sweep away dust and grime collected on your floors.

Doing a few chores before it’s time to sleep lifts your mood and gives you a much better rest.

9. Prepare for the Next Day

Sleeping won’t come easy if you’re trying to remember too many things at once. That’s why it’s a good idea to prepare everything you can before you get into bed.

Write down work-related things you need to remember. Set out a pair of clothes so that you don’t have to scramble to find something that matches.

By preparing yourself beforehand, you’ll have no thoughts holding you back from a good night’s sleep.

Rest Easy With a Good Nightly Routine

A nightly routine is more than a set of habits to finish every evening. A set routine starts signaling to your body that it’s time to wind down and get ready for sleep. It also gives you peace of mind knowing that all of these things are done.

By keeping up with a bedtime routine, you’re going to sleep far easier than you have before. It may take a few days to get into the habit, but soon you’ll find that you won’t be able to sleep without completing this great routine!
