Sean Justin Penn is a prominent actor and director in the entertainment industry. His roles have spanned across the spectrum of film and television. He has earned a number of accolades, including two Academy Awards for his performances in Mystic River and Milk.
Woody Allen
There’s no doubt that Woody Allen and Sean Penn have put their respective spins on the silver screen. Their latest endeavor, Sweet and Lowdown, is a solid effort that hits the right note. Using a mix of period and homage, Allen and his collaborators manage to pull off a high-octane ride that is sure to please both audiences. The film is littered with well-written characters and a host of musical oohs and aahs.
Emmet Ray (Sean Penn) may be a fictional 1930’s jazz guitarist, but the name is not a figment of his ego. Despite his success, he’s a slob and a liar, and has a knack for getting into scrapes. When his sweetheart Hattie (Samantha Morton) leaves him for Al Torrio (Ethan Hawke), Ray assumes she’ll take him back. However, he’s in for a rude awakening.
What’s more, Sweet and Lowdown boasts some of the tastiest food and drink you’ll find on any Hollywood set, not to mention a top-notch soundtrack. The film is loosely based on Federico Fellini’s La Strada, and features a number of notables. Aside from the Oscar-nominated performance of Sammy Davis Jr., a few of the other big hitters include John Waters, Bill Murray and Anthony LaPaglia. With a strong cast, great cinematography and a surprisingly solid script, this is sure to be a hit. One of the best things is that it’s a fun film to watch.
Besides the great acting, the film has a few minor flaws, but it’s well worth a watch. Among the other perks are some of Allen’s best period details, a nice script, and some of the best music you’ll hear anywhere. Whether or not this film is a keeper remains to be seen. Hopefully, we’ll have a good indication in the coming months. Until then, you can always check out the movie if you’re in town. After all, there’s no better way to kick off the Cannes Film Festival. It’s a rite of passage for film buffs and cinephiles, and the festival runs from May 11 through 22. For more information, visit the festival’s official website.
His political activism
If there’s one actor that’s always been an outspoken advocate for social and political causes, it’s Sean Penn. Although he hasn’t taken on the role of chief executive of a studio, he’s spent years putting his time and money into causes, from the Haiti earthquake to the Iraq War.
“Citizen Penn,” an upcoming documentary, will explore the actor’s life as a philanthropist and social activist. The film will focus on the actor’s decade-long mission to help improve the lives of those in need in Haiti. During this period, Penn’s efforts have included building a network of humanitarian aid providers, distributing food and medicine to victims, and laying floral wreathes to commemorate those who died.
One of the many perks of being a Hollywood star is a platform for activism. When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, Penn swam to the rescue and rescued many victims. He also aided the relief efforts after the Haitian earthquake of 2010.
Aside from his work in Haiti, Penn has contributed to social and political causes in other countries, including a recent trip to Pakistan. In 2012, Penn traveled to flood-stricken regions of Pakistan. While there, he helped distribute vaccines to the region’s displaced population.
While it’s hard to pick out the biggest winner of all of his activism, Sean Penn is certainly an impressive man. As an outspoken advocate for human rights, he’s done remarkable things. From the J/P Haitian Relief Organization to the CORE non-profit, he’s been active in the fight to help those in need.
Not only is he an outspoken champion of democratic ideals, he’s also one of the most influential actors of his generation. He’s also a double Oscar winner. However, he’s been outed as a liberal-left partisan, a reputation he’s made his own.
Despite his philanthropic proclivities, he’s also a polarizing figure. Fans and detractors alike are divided over his political leanings. For example, Sean Penn has a good amount of money to donate to Democratic candidates, but hasn’t endorsed a candidate.
His activism is not for show. Rather, it’s a testament to his commitment to advancing the best of humanity.
