1. Noom is a mobile app aimed to help people lose weight.

It is dubbed “Weight Watchers for Millennials”. The official website also claims that Noom is the ultimate weight loss program you can ever have. Upon downloading the app, Noom will serve as your personal health coach that fits in your pocket.

2. It is designed not to restrict your food intake.

Unlike other diet plans that have food restrictions, Noom will guide you on the path to holistic wellness. This app will mainly help you in choosing the right types of foods you can eat if you want to lose weight. More importantly, it can help you change your perception on weight loss in general.

3. Noom will help you on the physical and mental aspect of weight loss.

Noom will not only focus on helping one lose weight but also change people think about diet and weight loss in general. For one, the app will suggest the best foods you can eat. Each of these food items will be rated green, yellow or red depending on nutritional content. Noom also provides tips you can apply in your health and wellness journey.

How does the Noom diet work?

Upon downloading the app, you need to answer a quick questionnaire about your health and lifestyle. You will also have to log in your current weight, desired weight and the issues encountered during the Noom diet weight loss program.

Here are some other things you can expect with this weight loss app.

1. It will constantly monitor your weight loss activities.

The app will help you monitor your activities including your food intake. Through these data, you can set your health goals and develop your weight loss plan within 16 weeks as the app suggests.

2. Expect to be bombarded with tips and challenges for successful weight loss.

During the course of the program, you will be given mini-challenges and health-related articles to help motivate you on your weight loss goals. You will also have to log your everyday workout routines and your food intake.

3. Expect to see “Stoplight colors” on this app.

Food items will be marked as green (ex. vegetables, fruits, whole grains); yellow (ex. meats, dairy, starches); and red (ex. chocolate, butter, oily foods). Rather than discouraging you to eat any foods marked as “red”, the app encourages portion control instead. In other words, you can still enjoy all foods as long as you know how much of them go into your body.

4. Communicate with a “virtual” wellness coach.

Noom also features a “virtual” coach to help you with your weight loss journey. You will be assigned a Goal Specialist (GS in short) to offer support and guidance. You can also connect with the GS via personal message, which you can send through the app.

Is the Noom Diet Weight Loss Plan Worth It?

You can safely say it is effective if you base it on several before-and-after photos posted online by successful app users. Meanwhile, a 2016 open-access journal report revealed that almost 80 percent of Noom users indeed lost weight within October 2012 and April 2014. The same study also reported more weight loss success on users who monitored their food intake than those who didn’t.

While food journaling/monitoring does aid in weight loss, some skeptics may not be willing to shell out monthly fees for a weight loss app. According to them, they would rather choose a weight loss program that has both in-person and virtual support.

On the other hand, Noom is actually designed and developed by a certified dietician. Nothing beats face-to-face health support per se. But if it is not readily available, other options are available, which is why Noom was developed in the first place. At the end of the day, any diet can work as long as you stick to it. There are different options available – it’s just a matter of what will work for you best.
